Parent Burnout: 6 Tips to Crush It

You are tired. Plain and simple.

You’ve been tired for the past few months (or years) and you laugh at the idea of finding time for anything, let alone a nap.

All of your kiddos want 100% of you, 100% of your attention and they want it RIGHT NOW.

And you give it to them day after day after day. It feels endless at times. It feels like endless dishes, endless messes, endless toys, endless meals,  endless cleaning, endless everything.

Some days you feel so exhausted that you just want to quit, but you know you can’t. And you realize, “this is gonna last for another several years?!”

We’ve all felt this way and most of us have felt this way more than just once.

Parent burnout is for real, but there are some things we can do to fight off burn out.

#1 Don’t be in denial

They say the first step to recovery is to recognize you have a problem.

Instead of being stubborn and thinking we are fine, we should recognize when we are starting to burnout.

You may feel that what you’re experiencing is just normal life, but you can help yourself.

#2 Seek what you need

Experts express that a continual pattern of self-neglect is a chief cause of parental burnout.

We get so caught up in all that needs to be done that we ignore our own needs.

This may seem noble but this type of continual self-neglect leads to burnout and then the inevitable neglect of those around us because we get ourselves to a place where we have nothing left to give.

Sometimes it’s as simple as not eating, or drinking enough water.

It takes almost no time to grab a glass of water and we should do so to help ourselves and others.

Dealing with stress is harder when we are hungry, tired, and dehydrated.

Even just being properly hydrated can help your body deal with stress more effectively.

#3 Stop being negative towards yourself

Focusing on things you are “failing” at every day may seem like a good idea, but the experts say it’s not.

Perfectionism leads us to criticize ourselves for things that aren’t important.

It’s actually better to focus on what you got done in a day and be thankful for it. Reward yourself for getting tasks down and don’t punish yourself by being over critical.

#4 Don’t be an island

You are not alone.

Seek out friends and parent groups and get together with like minded people to help you.

It may be scary at first not knowing anyone, but as people open up about their struggles you’ll no longer feel alone and that’s a win.

It’s also very healthy to be able to tell someone what you are struggling through.

Don’t struggle alone. Find support in friends, family, and other groups.

#5 Pinpoint the problem

Some activities and events are going to be specifically more stressful for you than others.

Figure out what’s stressing you out and draining you the most.

We’re not going to say avoid it altogether because let’s face it, that might not be possible. But it is possible to better mentally prepare yourself.

If you know what stresses you out, you can fight it better. You can prepare yourself mentally to do that activity and be done with it for the day.

Sometimes it’s a person. Some things just have to be worked through.

Get help.

If you’re after school routine just can’t be handled anymore look for a college student or high school student to help out for an hour or two.

If you can get into a rhythm that helps you get things done every day you will be able to better deal with the stress and move on.

#6 Do look for rest

Some people think that they are bad parents if they try to find a break. This isn’t true.

But part of the problem is that sometimes we don’t do the little bit of extra work to plan for or make rest happen.

It may sound backward but if we don’t work to find rest we may never find it.

Make plans to take a nap, or read a book. Hire someone to help. Or if you can’t just be on the lookout for 20 minutes to an hour to be able to lay down and close your eyes.

Even just being able to stop for 20 minutes can really help reduce stress built up from not getting enough rest or sleep.

Hope this helps!
